Our Story
History
Cardinal Springs has been a labor of love for owners Andrea Wooten and Steve Ray. Andrea and Steve worked and lived in Northern Virginia when they purchased the historic county Poor Farm in 2004 as a retreat from city life. Soon afterwards, the call of the country beckoned them to sell their home in the suburbs and move to nearby “little” Washington, Virginia. They immediately began the task of restoring and improving the farm, one project at a time.
First Project
The first project involved damming a vibrant stream to establish a 2.5-acre pond along with several smaller ponds. A covered dock was constructed and roads and fences were added. The historic 1850s hand hewn log barn and the farm manager’s house, which now serves as a guest house (the “Farmhouse”) were lovingly restored.
Further Work
Ponds and streams were then fenced to protect waterways under the federal Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). Landscaping, stone walls, orchards, and gardens were added to beautify the property. And, in 2010, Andrea and Steve placed the entire 128-acre farm in conservation easement to protect it from development in perpetuity.
